One of two British explorer ships that vanished in the Arctic more than 160 years ago has been found, Canada's prime minister says.

Stephen Harper said it was unclear which ship had been found, but photo evidence confirmed it was one of them.

Sir John Franklin led the two ships and 129 men in 1845 to chart the Northwest Passage in the Canadian Arctic.

The expedition's disappearance shortly after became one of the great mysteries of the age of Victorian exploration.

En mängd expeditioner gav sig ut för att leta reda på Franklins expedition; en del av dem fick i sin tur räddas, eller försvann. Sammanlagt gav de betydligt mer kunskap än vad Franklins folk själva någonsin hade kunnat hinna.

Riktigt stort. Hade missat detta, och då är jag tämligen intresserad av detta ämnet. Nu diskuteras det redan bland entusiaster om det kan vara möjligt att hitta intakta dokument på fartyget som kan bringa klarhet i händelseförloppet. Med tanke på att man har bärgat en hel del dokument från vrak i djuphavet så kanske det kan vara möjligt. Vattnet är ju kallt i område, och syrehalten i vattnet låg.


Detta är en mycket bra blogg kring detta, driven av en entusiast. Det som är intressant är att denna vrakplats då verkar matcha muntliga uppgifter lämnade av inuiter om att ett fartyg skulle ha sjunkit där.

Spekulationerna om att Franklins kropp skulle kunna finnas ombord är väl måttligt sannolika, med tanke på att han ska ha dött långt innan fartyget ska ha sjukligt.
På bloggen som jag redan har länkat till så finns detta inlägg med spekulationer kring identiteten på ett skelett som hittades i en (relativt) välbyggd grav av en av expeditionerna. Där tog man med de ben som man kunde finna hem till England för begravning. Det ansågs då vara John Irving som var begrav där.

Två år efter Erebus har man nu nog, är man nästan tvärsäkra på, hittat HMS Terror. Helt oavsett vilket fartyg det är så är det utan tvekan ett finfint fynd.

On Sunday, a team from the charitable Arctic Research Foundation manoeuvred a small, remotely operated vehicle through an open hatch and into the ship to capture stunning images that give insight into life aboard the vessel close to 170 years ago.

“We have successfully entered the mess hall, worked our way into a few cabins and found the food storage room with plates and one can on the shelves,” Adrian Schimnowski, the foundation’s operations director, told the Guardian by email from the research vessel Martin Bergmann.

“We spotted two wine bottles, tables and empty shelving. Found a desk with open drawers with something in the back corner of the drawer.”

The well-preserved wreck matches the Terror in several key aspects, but it lies 60 miles (96km) south of where experts have long believed the ship was crushed by ice, and the discovery may force historians to rewrite a chapter in the history of exploration.

The 10-member Bergmann crew found the massive shipwreck, with her three masts broken but still standing, almost all hatches closed and everything stowed, in the middle of King William Island’s uncharted Terror Bay on 3 September.

Bägge var relativit små fartyg - omkring 350 ton så bärgning av det bättre bibehållna är fullt möjlig.
Även om det blir förbaskat dyrt.....
Kanada borde ha både intresse och pengarna - håll andan!

The remarkable state of the preservation of these things has led many to say the ship was found almost intact -- but that's not necessarily the case. The hull, particularly the keel, has yet to be properly examined by Parks Canada's marine archaeologists, and given the lateness of the season -- new ice is already forming in the shallow areas along the coast of King William Island -- that will have to wait until next year. In fact, it's not clear from the current reporting that Ryan Harris and his team have yet had access to the ship at all.

Some reports this morning speak of Parks Canada perhaps not having 'reached' the area, which is troubling. It appears that they were, at the time of the discovery, searching further north in the Victoria Strait; one would have expected that they would have been immediately alerted to the find, and could have arrived fairly quickly -- but the only video, the only descriptions we have so far are all from the crew of the Martin Bergmann. The video is narrated by almost every one of them -- including the ship's cook! -- but the context that a trained archaeologist could have provided is missing. The crew apparently deployed a ROV (remotely operated vehicle) and poked about all over, but the narrative of what they saw, like the discovery itself, remains uncorroborated.

And there is another vital piece of evidence as to how HMS "Terror" sank -- the Inuit testimony which, in nearly every other case, has proven reliable. And the Inuit tell of a far more chaotic and sudden event, one in which a number of the crew were trapped in the vessel and drowned. In my next post, I'll give their account.

Mänskliga kvarlevor borde väl ha potential att bevaras i denna miljö, i alla fall så skulle man väl kunna hitta skelettdelar.
