Gandhi och rasismen

Ok, då har jag väl läst fel nyhetskälla.

Sen huruvida Gandhi var rasist eller inte vet jag inte. Men utifrån de citat som kommit fram i den här tråden så tycker jag nog det blir en rätt svag bevisning för ett sådant påstående.
Gandhi kom till Sydafrika som en ung man från den indiska överklassen med brittisk utbildning, att han med den bakgrunden inte förstod sig på och såg ned på exempelvis förhärdade straffångar och "ociviliserade" grupper är ju tråkigt men inte ovanligt med den tidens synsätt. Jag tycker dock inte man kan hitta något stöd för att han skulle tyckt afrikaner var rasmässigt lägre stående än inder eller vita.

Jag tycker det finns klara stöd för det, och angående straffångarna är det bara ett citat som behandlar dem. Att vara rasist var dessutom rätt tidsenligt, precis som du påpekar.

Det som presenterats hittills är dock rätt småtamt, så vi kan börja med ännu mera.
Vi kan börja med att återge det halvåtergivna citatet som finns på Wikipedia i sin fullständiga form:

Ours is one continued struggle against degradation sought to be inflicted upon us by the European, who desire to degrade us to the level of the raw Kaffir, whose occupation is hunting and whose sole ambition is to collect a certain number of cattle to buy a wife with, and then pass his life in indolence and nakedness."

Ett rätt annorlunda citat eller hur?

A little judicious extra taxation would do no harm; in the majority of cases it compels the native to work for at least a few days a year.

"Now let us turn our attention to another and entirely unrepresented community - the Indian. He is in striking contrast with the native. While the native has been of little benefit to the State, it owes its prosperity largely to the Indians. While native loafers abound on every side, that species of humanity is almost unknown among Indians here."

I ett brev till London Times den 12:e November 1906 - Klagar Gandhi att "kaffir"-poliser trakasserar indier:

"Poor people were, under the registration effected by Lord Milner's advice, dragged at four o'clock on a cold winter's morning from their beds in Johannesburg, Heidelberg and Potchefstroom, and marched to the police station, or Asiatic Offices, as the case might be. It is they who under the Ordinance would be hustled by the Kaffir Police at every turn, and not the better-class Indians."

"At present, only the Permit Secretary is authorized to inspect a permit. Under the new Act, every Kaffir police constable can do so. Under the new Act, a Kaffir police constable can ask [an Asiatic] for particulars of name and identity, and, if not satisfied, can take him to the police station."

"Is there any Indian who is not roused to fury by such a law? We should very much like to know the Indian whose blood does not boil. And it is incredible to us that any Indian may want to submit to such legislation."

"In this instance of the fire-arms, the Asiatic has been most improperly bracketed with the natives. The British Indian does not need any such restrictions as are imposed by the Bill on the natives regarding the carrying of fire-arms. The prominent race can remain so by preventing the native from arming himself. Is there a slightest vestige of justification for so preventing the British Indian?"

Att han skulle vara rasist för att han bara kämpade för en grupps rätt är en mycket tveksam slutsats.

Men som sagt kanske var Gandhi rasist under tiden i Sydafrika, och kanske även under resten av sitt liv, jag vet inte något om det. Tycker dock att det krävs betydligt handfastare bevis än de luddiga och tvetydiga citat som setts i den här tråden för att man ska kunna hävda något sådant.

"We believe as much in the purity of race as we think they do, only we believe that they would best serve these interests, which are as dear to us as to them, by advocating the purity of all races, and not one alone. We believe also that the white race of South Africa should be the predominating race."

Jag tycker det är solklart. Att folk sedan vill bortförklara allt för att Gandhi skrev vad han skrev senare är rätt självklart, att bevisbördan för dessa kommer vara så hög så informationen inte går in hos dessa människor, vilka hos Gandhi har en gudlik status och är en orörbar ikon. Hade Gandhi enbart förblitt en advokat i Sydafrika,då tror jag att ingen hade försökt bortförklara hans citat. Men nu är det ju Gandhi.

Kan ge några fler citat, men de är i princip i samma anda. Jag tycker folk borde själva läsa Gandhi och inte anta en massa blaj och bara gå på myten.
