Nu så här i presidentsvaltider där The Star Spangled Banner
alltså den amerikanska national hymnen körs som den värsta slagdängan
den blev tydligen det först 1931. Just därför har jag en stilla fråga?
Vad var det för låt innan 1931?

On Sept. 13, 1814, Francis Scott Key visited the British fleet in Chesapeake Bay to secure the release of Dr. William Beanes, who had been captured after the burning of Washington, DC. The release was secured, but Key was detained on ship overnight during the shelling of Fort McHenry, one of the forts defending Baltimore. In the morning, he was so delighted to see the American flag still flying over the fort that he began a poem to commemorate the occasion. First published under the title “Defense of Fort M'Henry,” the poem soon attained wide popularity as sung to the tune “To Anacreon in Heaven.” The origin of this tune is obscure, but it may have been written by John Stafford Smith, a British composer born in 1750. “The Star-Spangled Banner” was officially made the national anthem by Congress in 1931, although it already had been adopted as such by the army and the navy.

Vad var det för låt innan 1931?

Jag har faktiskt också undrat över samma sak. Hade USA alls nån nationalsång innan Starspanglern antogs som sådan av kongressen?Inspirerad av ditt inlägg sökte jag lite på nätet. Här är vad jag lyckades få reda på:

Keys dikt, som alltså skrevs i september 1814, blev snabbt populär. Inom några månader efter belägringen av Fort Henry hade den tryckts i en rad böcker och tidskrifter. Snart började den också sjungas till den välkända engelska melodin - även om det är tveksamt om Key någonsin avsett att dikten skulle sjungas.

Det var under amerikanska inbördeskriget som "The Star-Spangled Banner" fick en särställning bland de fosterländska sångerna. Den sjöngs och spelades i både nord- och sydstaterna. Från och med kriget framfördes sången ofta som ett slags inofficiell nationalhymn inom krigsmakten. 1889 förordnade marinministern att den skulle spelas då fartygen hissade flaggan på morgonen. Armén följde flottans exempel.

Under första världskriget började det i kongressen höjas röster för att göra "The Star-Spangled Banner" till USA:s officiella nationalsång. En första lagmotion i ämnet lades fram år 1918, av kongressledamot Charles Linthicum från Maryland. Men processen gick långsamt. Också "America The Beautiful", "Hail Columbia" och "Yankee Doodle" hade sina förespråkare. Alla partier bombarderade de stackars kongressledamöterna med argument. "The Star-Spangled Banner" ansågs av vissa ha en alltför svårsjungen melodi, andra tyckte att orden var svåra att komma ihåg, andra att texten var alltför krigisk. Sanna patrioter pekade på att tonsättaren inte var amerikan, nykteristerna förfasade sig över att en melodi till en dryckesvisa skulle bli deras nationalsång (då rådde ju förbudslag i USA), och de som vinnlade sig om goda relationer till britterna var oroade för de känslor som formuleringar som "Their blood has wash'd out their foul footsteps' pollution" kunde väcka i London. Det fanns till och med de som hävdade att den federala regeringen inte hade befogenheter att pracka på amerikanerna nånting sånt som en "officiell nationalsång"!

Det hölls också tävlingar med mål att få fram en helt nyskriven nationalsång. En sån tävling ordnades år 1928 av staden New York. 45 förslag sändes in, men inget avgörande nåddes.

Det var segheten hos vissa enskilda idivider, som just Linthicum själv (han kom med totalt sex lagmotioner i saken) och fru Reuben Ross Holloway som slutligen avgjorde kampen. Den 3 mars 1931 stadfäste president Hoover lagen om "The Star-Spangled Banner" som USA:s nationalhymn.

Intressant, fast fortfarande så går det ej att utröna om det
fanns någon/alt vilken låt det var före 1931.

"My Country, 'Tis of Thee" lär ha varit en inofficiell nationalhymn. Med vilken status? En av flera? Ingen aning.
