http://www.familytreedna.com/public/rurikid/It was found that Rurik was of the Finno-Ugrian descent (haplogroup N3a1 beginning with the following markers : 14 23 14 11 11 13 11 12 10 14 14). However, from some historical sources it comes out that he was born in Sweden on the Roslagen seashore (north of Stockholm). This sounds reasonably, since Roslagen until 6/7 centuries was inhabited mainly by the Finnish population. There have been three groups of males which are (roughly) matching Rurik : the Finns, The Swedes and the Norwegian, and the British. The 1st group is believed to have originated from one of Rurik's ancestors who never left Finland for Sweden. The 2nd group is believed to come from another his ancestor who lived in Sweden. And the 3rd group most probably comes from one of his ancestors who lived in Sweden, and who joined a Viking expedition against the British Isles around 8th century A.D.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com ... /ydna.htmlThe N to N3 haplotypes are typical for the Ugro-Finnish population. The early Norse Varangians were called the “Russ” (so, the word “Russia” seems to have originated from the Russ-Varangians). Surprisingly, a lot of males in Spain and in Mexico are having N Ugro-Finnish haplotypes. This can be explained by an invasion of the Russ-Varangians of the southern part of Spain as early as in the year 845 (!) And this also suggests that the Russ-Varangians appeared in Russia by the year 862 (suggested in Nestor’s chronicle), possibly around the years 837-842.
