In a dive the Tempest was the only aircraft to reach, without interfering with its handling qualities to any marked extent, sub-sonic speeds, i.e. 550-600 m.p.h. "
Angående propellerplan och ljudvallen. Hittade texten nedan på http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/transcript ... rrier.htmlThere mostly two types of planes - SONIC and SUB SONIC planes . Sub sonic planes have the speed less than sound whereas the Sonic planes are those which are faster than sound .
...The sound barrier could not be broken in the propellerdriven plane. At very high speeds, shock waves also begin to form on the spinning propeller blades. So, the faster it goes, the less efficient the propeller becomes.
CAPT. ERIC BROWN: Fundamentally, the drag of the propeller was so high that it would never allow the aircraft to attain those speeds without running into virtually a brick wall. And we just had to wait until something better came along
