Archaeologists hunting for World War II Spitfires in Burma believe there are no planes buried at the sites where they have been digging, the BBC understands.
The archaeologists have concluded that evidence does not support the original claim that as many as 124 Spitfires were buried at the end of the war, the BBC's Fergal Keane reports.
Wargaming.net, the firm financing the dig, has also said there are no planes.
But project leader David Cundall says they are looking in the wrong place.
He told the BBC that he still believes Spitfires are buried at Rangoon airport and other sites.

Archaeologists have called off a hunt for World War II Spitfires in Burma.
Originally it was thought as many as 124 Spitfires were buried by the RAF at the end of the war but they have now concluded it was a myth.
A dig at the international airport near the city of Rangoon, which used to be RAF Mingaladon, has drawn a blank.
The project was financed by Wargaming Ltd, who have said they believe the story about Spitfires being delivered in crates and then buried was not true.
Tracy Spaight, Wargaming's director of special projects, said: "No-one would have been more delighted than our team had we found Spitfires.
"We knew the risks going in, as our team had spent many weeks in the archives and had not found any evidence to support the claim of buried Spitfires."

Claridon Group Save The Spitfire Project In Burma

Global Logistics company Claridon Group Ltd have stepped in to save David Cundall's project to locate buried Spitfires in Burma. After 16 years of dedicating his life to the project as well as his life savings, David is heading back to Burma to resume excavating and finding the Spitfires. Due to a lack of sponsorship earlier this year the project looked doomed. After hearing about David's situation, Claridon, stepped in to provide the funding to allow the project to continue.

Clickbait från mitt facebookflöde. Man är inte sämre i Turkiet. Femtio nedgrävda FW-190.

http://www.warhistoryonline.com/war-art ... urkey.html

Lite lösryckta citat ur artikeln, för eftervärldens dom:
Uluhan Hasdal, an amateur aviation historian, believes that he has located 50 of those planes buried underneath an air base in the city of Kayseri.
As the war was ending, Turkey joined with the Allies. When the war ended, the US insisted that Turkey destroys the German planes and purchase surplus US Navy planes.
Some experts think that the planes were sold for scrap in agreement with a 1947 agreement between the US and Turkey.
At that time the 50 aircraft disappeared. Hasdal believes that, instead of selling them for scrap, the Turkish military dismantled the planes and carefully wrapped them in oil-soaked rags, then buried them under the air base. From there, they could be dug up and reassembled, if needed.
