Greker i Waffen-SS eller vikten av källkritik

Nedanstående från AHF är (tyvärr) ett bra exempel på varför man inte blint ska lita på vad man hittar på Internet (eller för all del andra källor).

Actually there was a Waffen SS division made up completely by Hellenes. It was the 1. Hellenische Division SS "Leonidas" in which my grandfather served during 1942 in Cucasus. It's commander was the Greek ethnic from Pontus Sevastianos Foulidis. I attach a photo of this division taken in Georgia on June 1942 which shows the flagbearer of the division carying the flag,on his right Colonel Foulidis the commander and on the left of the flagbearer my grandfather Aristides Mitropoulos.

It should also be noted that the emblems are photoshopped, too.

The two arm patches is quite clearly Freikorps Danmark arm patches that has been re-colored. The re-coloration has been done by automatically replacing a number of red colors for blue colors. This is directly evident from small remaining red areas, most clearly visible between some of the strings of the ELLAS patch, but also visible on the red/black edges. This is natural, as the artifacts of the JPEG compression will create such areas outside the original red area.

The ELLAS text itself does not match the emblem, either. While the rest of the white blends with the black, creating similar JPEG artifacts, no such artifacts are found around ELLAS. The text is simply too clean. The same is true of the collar patch emblem.

The cuffband is also an obvious fake. The texture has been cloned over the existing text, revealing several fairly complicated repeated patterns. The chance of these patterns matching and pixel colors matching is highly unlikely, even for a repeated natural texture. I have attached an image to show what I mean. The text is also clearly too nice.

Antagligen ett skämt. Med tanke på att det finns få militära enheter som kartlagts på längden och tvären som Waffen-SS, rör det sig troligen om ett försök att skoja med mindre pålästa personer. Nu råkar AHF vara planetens sämsta site att försöka något sådant på...

Skämt eller inte: Det är just sådana här fabriceringar av inte alltför otroliga påståenden som har en tendens att slå rot lite varstans. Just nazismen har länge varit föremål för sådant. Mina egna efterforskningar har främst rört fejkade UFO-bilder som av någon anledning skulle bevisa Rikets storhet på ena eller andra sättet, men det verkar finnas hur mycket som helst i andra genrer. Om den aktuelle photoshopparen (om det nu är skribenten eller någon annan) har motiv i den stilen är en öppen fråga.

Som sagt, AHF är nog det sämsta stället någonsin att försöka lansera sådant på. Jag misstänker att lögnspridaren även ger sig på mjukare mål.
