The E.V. Haughwout Building is a five-story, 79-foot (24 m) tall, commercial loft building in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, at the corner of Broome Street and Broadway. Built in 1857, it was also the location of the world's first successful passenger elevator.
In 1852, Elisha Otis introduced the safety elevator, which prevented the fall of the cab if the cable broke. He demonstrated it at the New York exposition in the Crystal Palace in a dramatic, death-defying presentation in 1853, and the first such passenger elevator was installed at 488 Broadway in New York City on 23 March 1857. It had a speed of .67 feet per second (0.20 m/s), and was powered by a steam-engine installed in the basement.
