Ledtrad for huvudfragan: Hennes dagbok publicerades efter kriget och anses vara en obligatorisk bok for folk som ar intresserade av det Amerikanska Inbordeskriget, och da sarskilt av hur folket i sydstaterna upplevde konflikten. Jag har sjalv boken i min bokhylla. 8)

Den mystiska kvinnan ar Mary Chestnut (1823-1886) fran Stateboro, Sydkarolina. Den dagbok hon skrev under kriget publiserades forsta gangen i 1905 som "A Diary from Dixie" (aven kand som Mary Chestnut's Civil War) och anses vara mycket betydelseful som historisk kalla.
Hennes make James Chestnut var en senator for Sydkarolina i Washington aren 1859-1861. Han hjalpte till med skrivandet av Sydkarolinas uttradelseforordning och blev efter CSAs skapande presidenten Jefferson Davis assistent. Han blev aven Brigadgeneral i konfederationens militara styrkor.
