There exists an interesting account written by historian Muhammad al-Husayni Taqi al-Din al-Maqrizi (died CE 1442), in a book called al-Mawa`iz wa al-i`tibar fi dhikr al-khitat wa al-athar (G. Wien, ed., 1913). In vol. 2, page 157 of the Wien edition, al-Maqrizi states that the face, specifically the nose and ears, were demolished in 1378 by a Sufi from the khanqah of Sa`id al-Su`ada named Sa'im al-dahr. The reason for the vandalism, according to al-Maqrizi, was to "remedy some religious errors:" at that time some Egyptians were still burning milk-thistle (shuka`a) and safflower (badhaward) at the foot of the Sphinx while murmuring a verse 63 times in hope that their wishes would be fulfilled. "From the time of this disfigurement also," al-Maqrizi wrote, "the sand has invaded the cultivated land of Giza, and the people attribute this to the disfigurement of Abul-Hol [i.e., the Sphinx]."

It is interesting that al-Maqrizi mentions that the ears were demolished. As far as I can see, the Sphinx still has his ears.

Nä, det är ju sant. Men det verkar vara den äldsta dokumentationen av direkt vandalism av sfinxen.

Finally, an article by Ulrich Haarmann, "Regional Sentiment in Medieval Islamic Egypt," published in the University of London's Bulletin Of The School Of Oriental And African Studies (BSOAS), vol.43 (1980) p.55-66, states that according to Makrizi, Rashidi and other medieval Arab scholars, the face of the Sphinx was vandalized in 1378 A.D. by Mohammed Sa'im al-Dahr, a "fanatical sufi of the oldest and most highly respected sufi convent of Cairo." The nose and ears are mentioned specifically as having been damaged at this time. According to one account, Haarmann states, the residents in the neighborhood of the Sphinx were so upset by the destruction that they lynched him and buried him near the great monument he ruined.

Kan det inte bara vara så enkelt att näsan trillat av under årens lopp? den är ju trotts allt den mest utsatta punkten på gammla statyer, någon nämnde i och för sig något om märken efter mejslar där näsan en gång satt..

Blev särskilt glad när jag såg att The J. Paul Getty Trust hade med Nordens bok från 1755 bland sina "recent acquisitions", och haft vänligheten att lägga ut just den bild jag var intresserad av! - Den förekommer på nätet sen tidigare, men ingen ens hälften så bra.
(Ännu gladare blev jag när jag såg att Norden tagit med näsan när han skissat huvudet! Få se vad konspirationsteoretikerna säger när de märker det...)
