Språkvetaren Xaviero Ballester skriver i artikeln The First Germanic Origin of the English Language (2004) under rubriken The indigenist approach:

In the past few years, a group of researchers (myself included) from different specialities and nationalities, have been refuting the traditional version of the origins of the Indo-European languages, as well as its revision of Neolithic tendency made by Sir Colin Renfrew [specially 1990, 1999].

We agree - and this assertion could have further consequences - on carrying back in time the dates, not only of the Indo-European linguistic conglomerate, but also those of the emergence of its different groups. In the same way, we have been rejecting as an explanation of the spreading of the Indo-European languages the two competing linguicide theories, invasion or supremacy inclined, not only the ones referring to war, which are totally phantasmagoric in their empirical manifestations, but also the ones referring to peace.

We suggested, instead, an indigenist background within a more general frame which has been named Teoria della Continuità by the no doubt most manifest representative of this proposal Mario Alinei [1996, 2000], probably in agreement with the similar Uralic theory (in Finnish jatkuvaisuusteoria) which prevails at the moment, and antedates the formation of this linguistic conglomerate to the Paleolithic period. These ideas had very early precursors such as Kühn [1932]. Along with the most modern glottologists and Alinei, we would like to mention Costa [1998, 2001] and Cavazza [2001].

On the other hand, the emergent interdisciplinary consensus is playing a very important role in the consolidation of these new postulates. This consensus is represented by archaeologists such as Poghirc [1992], climatologists such as Adams [1999 with Otte], historians such as Häusler [1996, 1998], or prehistorians such as Otte [1997, 1998, 1999 with Adams, 2000]. Given the convergence of their data, we should also add some genetists such as Richards [2000], Semino [2000] and their research teams, as well as Sykes [2001], whose studies support the Palaeolithic origin of the genes of most Europeans. Even though these findings are not decisive or direct proof that the Indo-European conglomerate should also be dated to that period, they, for obvious reasons, represent a major obstacle to any theory claiming a later dating.

I artikeln At the Edge of Knowability: Towards a Prehistory of Languages (2000) skriver Renfrew:

In retrospect ... Archaeology and Language suffered from two principal defects (among other deficiencies). In the first place, it laid too much store by the 'demic diffusion' model of Ammerman & Cavalli-Sforza and not enough on the phenomenon of contact-induced language change. Ironically perhaps it is the application of molecular genetics which has given new insights into the limited extent to which demic diffusion took place ... And secondly it did not sufficiently deal with the complexity of the further developments of the Indo-European languages in the long time span after the initial Proto-Indo-European spread, with local convergence (or advergence) effects responsible for the formation of some of the sub-families ... But it did, perhaps for the first time in the context of recent discussions, establish two principles or processes which turn out to be applicable on a much wider canvas than that of prehistoric Europe. The first is the creation or at least the foundation of a language family not through some long-distance tribal migration (like that of the legendary mounted warrior-nomads) but through a spread phenomenon which may be seen as the result of an intelligible economic and demographic process (on the subsistence/demography model). ---

The second principle is a matter of time depth. Hitherto, historical linguists have in general come to employ what the archaeologist would term a 'short chronology', with a time depth for language families of often just five or six thousand years before the present. But many of the decisive demographic processes in world history are climate-related, either the direct consequence of such phenomena as the end of the Late Glacial Maximum or the end of the Pleistocene period, or the indirect consequence, dependent for instance upon the origins of farming, a process which is now viewed in most parts of the world as initiated by those climatic events but slower to develop in some areas.

I artikeln The Tarim Basin, Tocharian, and the Indo-European origins: a view from the west (1998) skriver Renfrew om de tidiga indoeuropeiska språken:

In harmony with the view of Dolgopolsky, and of Gamkrelidze and Ivanov, and following Sturtevant ..., I suggest that the basic division in the early Indo-European languages is between the Anatolian languages on one hand and all the other members of the Indo-European family in the other. Such a view arises directly from the "farming dispersal" hypothesis, since farming came to Europe from Anatolia. It is suggested that all the other branches of the Indo-European languages (except possibly Armenian) were derived from the western branch of the divide (ancestral to the Indo-European languages of Europe, including those of the steppes, and thus also of the Iranian plateau, central Asia, and south Asia) ... The secondary center, as Diakonoff realized, is the Balkans (around 5000 BCE), and from there one must envisage a division with the bulk of the early Proto-Indo-European languages of central and Western Europe (the languages of "Old Europe" in some terminologies, although emphatically not that of Gimbutas) on the one hand, and those of the steppe lands to the north of the Black Sea on the other (4th millenium BCE).

The Culture Change in Europe in the Second Millenium.

I boken Gods and Goddesses of Old Europe 7000 - 3500 BC. Myths, Legends and Cult Images (1974, ny utgåva 1989 under titeln The Goddesses and Gods of Old Europe 6500 - 3500 BC) skriver Gimbutas:

Gudinnan Creatix? I artikeln The Fall and Tranformation of Old Europe. Recapitulation 1993 drar Gimbutas iväg ordentligt:

By 4500 BC, the European continent hosted a flourishing group of Goddess worshipping cultures. Over the preceding two millenia, from about 6500 BC to 4500 BC, these cultures had undergone a peaceful evolution, and by the end of this time achieved what could properly be called a Golden Age of Old European civilization. They produced arts and crafts of remarkable quality. Communities achieved populations of many thousands and were laid out in a planned manner. Towns were located at consistently even distances from each other, with larger cities acting as religious and trading centers. Metallurgy was practiced in east-central Europe; artisans produced copper and gold, tools, jewelry and symbols that display a complete mastery of these media. Old European ceramicists produced pottery so refined that it would not be matched for thousands of years. They developed a form of writing which shows the ability to deal with a high level of abstraction.

The focus of life for these peoples was religion: the perpetual functioning of the cycle of life, death, and regeneration embodied by a central feminine force - the Goddess. The tens of thousands of figurines and sculptures, the burial rites, the rich religious symbolism, all attest the ideology of these peoples. The most advanced architecture - two-story buildings - were reserved for temples. Religion pervaded every aspect of life, and even weaving and the baking of bread were included as sacred activities in the temples. The achievements of these ancient civilizations were attained without the use of force. Nowhere in Old Europe is there evidence of warfare. Heavy fortifications are absent, and settlements are located for their proximity to fields and water sources, not for protection from attack. Henge monuments enclosed by ditches and palisades were built for ritual purposes, not as defensive fortifications. Evidence of pitched battle and violent invasions is nonexistent. Nowhere are there buried warriors, with limbs hacked off or spearheads embedded in bones, and nowhere are there signs of glorification of war heroes. The society was gynocentric and matrilineal. The family clan was structured around the clan's women; the older women were especially revered as creators of the clan. In this way, the central role of the women in the family clan reflected the central role of the Goddess in religion.

Around 4300 BC, the Golden Age of Old Europe in the Danube basin came to an end. The continuity and fabric of Old European society was torn. ---

The drastic changes that took place in Europe after 4500 BC can be explained by influence from the outside and the imposition of a foreign culture's belief system and politics. The sudden upheavals in central Europe can only be understood by looking further east, to homelands of another, completely different culture.

Gimbutas ideologiska bevekelsegrunder, hennes ”nyhedniska feminism”, framgår tydligt i boken The Language of the Goddess (1989):

Se

http://jies.org

1989 utkom Mallorys bok In Search of the Indo-Europeans.

A Study of Indo-European Origins.

2003 utkom den av arkeologerna Peter Bellwood och Colin Renfrew redigerade boken Examining the farming/language dispersal hypothesis (McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research) till vilken flera forskare lämnat bidrag.

Av stort intresse är kapitel 35 med rubriken Complex Signals for Population Expansions in Europe and Beyond, där 17 (!) genetiker, däribland Kristiina Tambets och Lars Beckman, huvudsakligen behandlar frågan om tiden innan jordbrukets spridning.

Om förneolitiska befolkningsexpansioner

It is justifiable to expect that the main driving forces behind the ancient demographic behaviour of human populations were more or less directly related to the availability of food and hunting and gathering territories. Consequently, one may presume that pre- Neolithic population expansions, on a Eurasian scale, could be largely attributed and traced to periods when large 'virgin' land areas first became available. The first colonization of Eurasia by modern humans and, particularly for Europe, the postglacial re-colonization of formerly glaciated territories, are two obvious examples. Less discussed in the western Eurasian context are other possible re-colonizations, particularly of lands deserted because of the extreme aridity that accompanied the LGM (Last Glacial Maximum) and made large areas of northern Africa and the Near and Middle East inhospitable for humans. And then there was the Younger Dryas, with its very abrupt return to cold and dry conditions, possibly even more dangerous for human survival than equally harsh but much slower environmental changes.

Koloniseringen av Europa - "the first language spread zone"

Modern humans started to colonize Europe about 40,000 - 50,000 years ago. Population density underwent many profound changes. How these phases of expansion/stabilization and regression/re-occupation may have influenced the linguistic situation is discussed by Renfrew
(At the edge of knowability: towards a prehistory of languages, 2000). He pays attention mostly to the more recent periods, whereas we will try to start 'from the beginning'. In the Eurasian context, it would be possible to consider the first expansion phase (i.e. the first colonization of Eurasia by modern humans) as having generated the first language spread zone.

Nedisningen - vad hände med språken?

Next, one may ask how a drastic shrinkage of the area inhabited during the LGM (particularly in Europe) influenced the linguistic situation. While several much shorter post-LGM cold phases like the Younger Dryas arose and disappeared abruptly, within perhaps a few generations
(van Andel, T.H., Where received wisdom fails: the mid-Palaeolithic and early Neolithic climates, 2000), it seems that the LGM itself developed in cold intensity much more slowly - a process that might well have allowed time for 'an organized retreat' into refugia. What proportion of the pre-LGM mtDNA and Y-chromosomal diversity survived in these refugia? And what was happening with languages?

Konvergens? Divergens?

However remote the pre-LGM period may seem to us - but notice a recent confirmation of sophisticated Aurignacian cave art in France
(Valladas, H. m.fl, Palaeolithic paintings: evolution of prehistoric cave art, 2001) - it lasted for more than 15,000 years and was a period when some of the most remarkable pan-European cultures like the Aurignacian and Gravettian flourished. Could the following glacial maximum period (roughly 24,000 - 16,000 BP) represent a strong convergence phase for the pre-LGM languages in refuge areas, coupled with a simultaneous and profound divergence enforced by the geographic isolation of the principal refugia? And how complete was this isolation?

For example, was the 'Periglacial refugium'
(Dolukhanov, P., 'Prehistoric revolutions' and languages in Europe, 2000) in Eastern Europe indeed isolated for millennia from other (likely) refugia in France and Iberia, in southern Siberia, in the Balkans, and along the eastern Black Sea coast? And were the latter two isolated from eastern Anatolia and the Levant, or was there in fact traffic, the migration of humans, forth and back? What influence would such traffic have had on the then-existing patterns of languages? Is this question at all relevant for the emergence of language families as we know them at present? Is it beyond knowability? If so, then archaeology and genetics can operate free of linguistic constraints over the time frame under discussion.

Och en försiktig fråga

Is it meaningful to explore, just for the sake of curiosity, an alternative working hypothesis according to which (some) language families which are currently spread across western Eurasia may have had their origins in a convergence phase during the LGM, where refugia brought together languages which earlier, during perhaps the preceding 15,000 years (or even much longer), were subject to a 'spread zone' scenario?

Senare i kapitlet nämner författarna "Proto-Finno-Ugric languages", men det är uppenbart att de också räknar den indoeuropeiska språkfamiljen till de "language families which are currently spread across western Eurasia" som "may have had their origins in a convergence phase during the LGM".

Case studies

Författarna tar därefter upp

... a few 'case studies', in order to illustrate why it seem to us that the genetic interpretation of demographic and probably linguistic histories needs a time span at least back to the late Pleistocene.

Uppgifterna om haplogrupp U4 (mtDNA) är av intresse.

Haplogruppen är vanligast förekommande i östra Europa.

Undergruppen U4b är dock "largely, though not solely, typical for Germanic-speaking populations". Författarna nämner "Germans, Norwegians, Swedes, Icelanders, Scots, German-speaking Swiss". Haplogruppen är mycket sällsynt hos finsk-ugriska folk.

Åldern för U4 har beräknats till 16,000 - 24,000 år och för U4b till 10,000 - 14,000 år.

Den beräknade åldern för haplogrupp U4b tyder på

... that the beginning of their expansion was ... in the late Pleistoscene, corresponding to the period of fast regression of continental ice cover in northern Europe and the general 'improvement' of climate ...

Rubber Duck skrev:
http://www.dn.se/DNet/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=1194&a=177836

In a paper co-authored with N. Rajaram, Frawley points to recent articles in the British Journal Current Biology, that have major implications for India. Based on genetic tests, the articles note that a key mitochondria DNA of the Western Eurasian strain accounts for no more than 5.2 per cent in Indian populations, as against over 70 per cent in European countries like Germany. Simply put, this means that the supposed Aryan invasion is contradicted by genetics. This means that there was no ‘Aryan invasion,’ not even any significant ‘Aryan migration.’

Mallory, James P. In Search of the Indo-Europeans. Thames & Hudson 1989.
Renfrew, Colin. Arkeologi och språk. Symposion 1989. (orig. Archaeology and Language, 1987)

Detta gäller bl.a Skandinavien!

Se mina tidigare inlägg i denna tråd!

Forskare som Spencer Wells vill i M17 se en "indoeuropeisk markör" (The Journey of Man. A Genetic Odyssey, 2002).

This means that there was no ‘Aryan invasion,’ not even any significant ‘Aryan migration.’
källa:Telling the true story of history Genetic Tests against the fictional Aryan Race By Sandhya Jain

In any case, developments in genetics take away much of the edge of the sometimes heated controversies about invasions. They indicate a strong genetic continuity in Europe; specifically, studies by Brian Sykes show that some 80% of the genetic stock of Europeans goes back to the Paleolithic, suggesting that languages tend to spread geographically by cultural contact rather than by invasion and extermination, i.e. much more peacefully than was described in some invasion scenarios, and thus the genetic record does not rule out the historically much more common type of invasions where a new group assimilates the earlier inhabitants (e.g. Romans in Southern Europe, Britons in Brittany, Arabs in North Africa, Slavs in Russia, Chinese in Southern China, Spanish in Mexico and Turks in Anatolia, etc.). This very common scenario of successive small scale invasions where a ruling nation imposed its language and culture on a larger indigenous population was what Gimbutas had in mind:

The Process of Indo-Europeanization was a cultural, not a physical transformation. It must be understood as a military victory in terms of imposing a new administrative system, language and religion upon the indigenous groups.

On the other hand, such results also gave rise to a new incarnation of the "European hypothesis" suggesting the Indo-European languages to have existed in Europe since the Paleolithic (see Paleolithic Continuity Theory)..

Bryan Sykes studier

Bryan Sykes var en av de forskare som deltog i den undersökning om förekomsten av mitokondriella haplogrupper i Europa som gjordes i mitten av 90-talet (Richards, Martin R. m.fl, Palaeolithic and Neolithic lineages in the European mitochondrial gene pool, The American Journal of Human Genetics, 1996).

Några år senare gjorde andra forskare en undersökning om förekomsten av Y-kromosomala haplogrupper (Semoni, Ornella m.fl, The genetic legacy of Paleolithic Homo sapiens sapiens in extant Europeans: a Y chromosome perspective, Science, 2000).

Bryan Sykes är visserligen medförfattare till den forskningsrapport som publicerades 1996, men Wikipedia-skribentens påstående att "studies by Brian Sykes show that some 80% of the genetic stock of Europeans goes back to the Paleolithic" är faktiskt felaktigt.

Invasioner

Wikipedia-skribenten anför att det förhållandet att studier visat att "some 80% of the genetic stock of Europeans goes back to the Paleolithic" tyder på att "languages tend to spread geographically by cultural contact rather than by invasion and extermination, i.e. much more peacefully than was described in some invasion scenarios, and thus the genetic record does not rule out the historically much more common type of invasions where a new group assimilates the earlier inhabitants".

Att "some 80% of the genetic stock of Europeans goes back to the Paleolithic" utgör dock inget argument mot att indoeuropeiskan spritts från något område i Europa "by invasion and extermination" (!) efter det att jordbruket införts!

Om nu Marija Gimbutas, när hon skrev dessa rader, "had in mind" (vilket är tveksamt) "this very common scenario of successive small scale invasions where a ruling nation imposed its language and culture on a larger indigenous population", varför tillhandahåller då inte skribenten ett citat där Gimbutas uttryckligen framför denna uppfattning om spridningssättet?

Citatet är hämtat ur artikeln Primary and Secondary Homeland of the Indo-Europeans. Comments on Gamkrelidze-Ivanov articles (The Journal of Indo-European Studies 13, 1985).

Samma text förekommer i artikeln Remarks on the Ethnogenesis of the Indo-Europeans in Europe (Ethnogenese europäischer Völker, 1986) med tillägget "essentially",

The Process of Indo-Europeanization was essentially a cultural, not a physical transformation.

Tidsdjup

The Culture Change in Europe in the Second Millenium.

Mallory skriver i sin bok In Search of the Indo-Europeans. Language, Archaeology and Myth (1989)

Proto-Indo-European probably evolved out of the languages spoken by hunter-fishing communities in the Pontic-Caspian region. ...

It is reasonably certain that the process by which the Indo-European languages expanded was not uniform but rather dependent on particular circumstances.

Om Gimbutas krigiska urindoeuropéer:

In numerous works, Marija Gimbutas has argued that intrusions occurred in three waves. Southeast Europe is envisaged as initially having an essentially settled, agricultural, matrilineal, peaceful population, with an extremely rich artistic and religious vocabulary expressed through ceramics and figurines. This society was either destroyed or subjugated by essentially pastoral, warlike, patrilineal Kurgan tribes from the Pontic-Caspian steppe. Such a brusquely simplified presentation of this invasion hypothesis [av Gimbutas själv] naturally rests most uncomfortably with many archaeologists, and one must surely question an explanation that focuses so intensely on elements such as the martial proclivities of the steppe intruders. Other factors were surely at play. ...

The very fact that war-bands are by no means a uniquely Indo-European phenomenon should caution us against reading into the archaeological record an Indo-European behind every burial accompanied by a stone or metal battle-axe. Warfare is the product of environmental, economic and social circumstances that can be found anywhere, and there is no reason for assuming an inherently warlike character for the Indo-Europeans.

More importantly, our evidence for Indo-European war-bands is derived from very different time periods with none before the Late Bronze Age.

Mallory tillstår de brister kurganteorin har.

Ultimately, we have a remarkably unsatisfactory set of choices. We can accept a Pontic-Caspian homeland despite the fact that it still appears to be archaeologically undemonstrated, even under the most liberal canons of proof, in explaining the Indo-Europeans of Northern and Central Europe. Alternatively, we might wish to opt for a broader homeland between the Rhine and Volga during the Palaeolithic or Mesolithic which resolves the archaeological issues by fiat but appears to be linguistically implausible.

Låg urhemmet i mellersta Tyskland?

Farming Dispersal Thesis for Indo-European

Den brittiske arkeologen Colin Renfrew lade 1987 fram sin "farming dispersal thesis for Indo-European" i boken Archeology and Language. The Puzzle of Indo-European Origins (svensk utgåva 1989 under titeln Arkeologi och språk.

Diakonov skriver senare i sin bok The Paths of History (1999)

However, I would like to note at once - against the opinions of Marija Gimbutas and other authorities of the nineteenth and twetieth centuries, but in accordance with the later findings of C. Renfrew and J.P. Mallory - that the most ancient Indo-Europeans living in the fifth to third millenia BC, i.e. long before the Iron Age, although already acquinted with horse-drawn chariots, never were nomads. Their movement across Eurasia (presumably via the Balkans) was not a military invasion, but a slow spread, caused by a fall in the child mortality rate and, consequently, by an increase in population growth. The reason was that the population speaking the Indo-European proto-language changed to a diet of milk and meat, and had a sufficiently developed agriculture (growing barley, wheat, grapes and vegetables). The surrounding population which lived in the Early Primitive Phase, and thus was by far not so numerous (the population numbers after the change from Primitive to Primitive Communal Phase tend to multiply by two orders of magnitude), adopted the agricultural achievements of the Indo-Europeans, and at the same time also adopted their language; thus the further movements involved not only the original Indo-Europeans but also the tribes who had adopted the language and the mores, the latter including the Primitive Communal stage customs which the Indo-Europeans had evolved.

I artikeln Europe's oldest language? (1999) skriver Wiik

Once upon a time there was a northern Europe of successful big-game hunters which unified into a zone of Uralic languages; there followed a central and southern Europe of successful farmers which first unified into an area of Indo-European languages and then began to spread into northern Europe, thus giving rise to an important 'intermediate zone' (the areas of the original Germanic, Baltic and Slavic languages). ---

My most decisive claim is that the Germanic, Baltic and Slavic languages were born under the influence of the Finno-Ugrian languages in the context of a shift in language from Finno-Ugrian to Indo-European.

A 'sparse wave' of hunter-gatherers migrating rapidly out of a refugial area (possibly located in southern Europe and/or the Near East) would have made a disproportionate contribution to the genetic and linguistic legacy of the region. This may explain part of the initial prehistoric dispersal pattern of the Indo-European languages. ...

... any one group that acquired both the general cultural traits that caused it to spread rapidly out of a refugium, and the technology to enable it to do so, would have experienced rapid exponential population growth in an environment relatively free from competition by other hunter-gatherer groups. Such a group, spreading out northwards and westwards, and possibly eastwards as well, would make a disproportionate contribution to the genetic and linguistic legacy of Europe and parts of the Near East.

Other groups even a few centuries slower in expanding their range and populations in tune with the climate change would have become numerically dominated by the earlier colonists as they left their refugial homelands, given the likely exponential growth rate of each population. Even at the relatively low densities that hunter-gatherer populations would have been capable of achieving, competition or at least interaction between groups would eventually have become more frequent, with less abundant (non-Indo-European speaking) groups much more likely to lose their cultural and linguistic identity among a larger wave of Indo-European speakers. This scenario, of separate refugial populations which failed to expand fast enough to dominate linguistically, may explain the existence of the Basque language group, as a 'potential' European dominant that narrowly failed to expand out before the Indo-European speakers became abundant in central and eastern Europe, south-eastern Europe and possibly also most other parts of Europe. The extinct Etruscan, Ligurian and Iberian language groups may be regarded as further examples of the same. As the hypothetical Indo-European wave spread out in each direction, it can be expected to have 'gathered up' the genetic and linguistic legacy of scattered smaller populations it encountered along its way, as each of these began a slightly later spread out of southern European refugia. This process of 'gathering up' may explain some of the current east-west and north-south gradients which now exist in Europe, and some of the differences between the present-day branches of the Indo-European family of languages.

Paleolithic Continuity Theory on Indo-European origins (PCT)

Alinei skriver om kurganteorin i artikeln The Paleolithic Continuity Theory on Indo-European origins: an introduction (2004)

From the steppe area, the Proto-IE kurgan conquerors would have then first invaded Southern Eastern Europe, then, in the III millennium, after having evolved into the so called Battle Axe people, would have somehow erased most pre-existing languages, and brought IE languages all over Europe.

By placing the arrival of the IEs in the IV millennium, and the process of transformation from Proto-IE to separate language groups in the III, the subsequent process, by which the separate language groups would evolve into the major attested languages, will inevitably take place in the II and I millennium that is in the Bronze and Iron Age.

Although most IE specialists are still reluctant to admit it, this chronology, as well as the scenario behind it, can now be considered as altogether obsolete. The evidence collected by archaeology in the last thirty years, in fact, overwhelmingly prove the absence of any large scale invasion in Europe, and the uninterrupted continuity of most Copper and Bronze Age cultures of Europe from Neolithic, and of most Neolithic cultures from Mesolithic and final Paleolithic.

Archaeologists usually do not address linguistic issues. This is probably why, although firm conclusions about absence of invasions and cultural continuity already began to appear in the archaeological literature of the Seventies, historical linguists have continued to assume the traditional theory as an undisputed truth.

Om Renfrews teori:

... since farming originated in the Middle East, and archaeology does detect in southern Europe a modest migratory contribution from that direction, associated with the introduction of farming, Renfrew has concluded that these early farmers were the Proto-Indo-Europeans, responsible for the introduction of IE in southern and central Europe, and that the subsequent IE dispersal started from these two areas, along with the dispersal of farming techniques. And since an intrusive contribution is especially evident in the two earliest Neolithic cultures of southern Europe, both dated to the VII millennium, namely the Balkan complex and the Impresso/Cardial Ware in Western and Central Mediterranean, and to a lesser extent in the Linienbandkeramik (LBK) culture in Germany and Eastern Europe, dated to the V millennium, these cultures would represent the first introduction of IE into Europe. ...

Renfrew’s book has unleashed a very lively international debate, which has been constantly growing, at the same time shifting its focus in response to growing objections. His theory, which owing to its focus on the Neolithic discontinuity can be called the Neolithic Discontinuity Theory (NDT), is undoubtedly superior to the traditional Invasion Theory ...

However, for the rest it creates more problems than it solves:

(1) Archaeology proves that most European Neolithic cultures directly continue earlier Mesolithic cultures, and even in those areas where intrusions are archaeologically ascertained, the Mesolithic populations were quickly involved in the acculturation process: there is no real discontinuity between Mesolithic and Neolithic ...

(2) The two Southern European areas, where Neolithic cultures do show infiltrations from the Middle East, are precisely the areas where non-IE linguistic traits are most evident and important, as every linguist who is familiar with the linguistic record of ancient (and modern) Italy and Greece will readily admit. Which points precisely to the contrary of what the NDT implies, namely that the South of Europe should have received the strongest influence from the PIE
coming from the Middle East. To explain the real linguistic situation, in fact, the NDT assumption must be simply reversed: the Middle Eastern farmers introducing Neolithic into Southern Europe were precisely the non-Indo-European groups responsible for the non-IE element of the area ...

(3) As far as the North and the West of Europe are concerned, the NDT is obliged to assume that IE 'arrived' there long after the first Neolithic cultures. However, that period is precisely the one in which archaeology detects no trace whatsoever of discontinuity: there is, for example, absolutely no trace of the 'arrival' of the Celts in Western Europe (which simply means that they were always there), and as to Germanic people, it is preposterous to think that the farmers of the LBK, Proto-Germanic according to the NDT, would be motivated to spread northward to Scandinavia and to Norway, would adopt the Mesolithic fishing tools and deep-sea fishing techniques and habits of the rich Mesolithic specialised fishing cultures of that area, without adopting, however, any part of their fishing terminology, and especially without adopting any their place names: the whole Scandinavian toponymy is either Germanic or Uralic! Obviously, the convergence between the continuity of Northern peoples, fishing cultures and technologies, and the Germanic or Uralic character of terminologies and place names point to continuity of language, just as it does in the Uralic area ...

(4) As I have shown in my book and in a number of articles ..., there is just no way to reconcile the semantic history of innumerable IE words, and their chronological implications, with the NDT scenario. Any thorough and unbiased analysis of the rich IE record points to a Paleolithic depth for the earliest layers of the PIE vocabulary, and to a very early, Upper Paleolithic and Mesolithic linguistic differentiation of Proto-Indo-Europeans. This is the reason why the IE Neolithic terminology, as now admitted even by traditional scholars ..., is neatly differentiated from group to group: a fact that clashes against the very idea of the Indo-Europeans as inventors of farming ...

Alteuropateorin
