Till italikerna (eller italerna) kan alltså räknas:
1. de folk som befolkade Italien före romarna (förr vanlig betydelse, numera ovanlig)
2. endast de folk enl punkt 1. som talade indoeuropeiska språk (inkluderande grekerna, men exkluderande etruskerna)
3. endast de folk enl punkt 2. som talade språk tillhörande den italiska språkfamiljen (exkluderande grekerna, messapierna, veneterna, etc). Detta är numera den vanligaste betydelsen.
